Split is a macOS window manager built around paired, connected windows rather than independent snap zones. You place a window with a menu action, shortcut, or drag-to-snap, and the second window fills the opposite side, with both sides linked by a shared divider you can drag to resize them together.

How It Works

Split requires Accessibility access so it can identify, move, resize, focus, or close windows when you trigger those actions. You place a window three ways: set a preferred proportion and choose a menu action or shortcut (such as ⌃A for left placement) to place the focused window, drag a window into a snap zone and let go, or drag the white divider between two already-placed windows to resize both sides at once. Once two windows are paired, Option–Tab cycles focus between them, and a one-click swap exchanges which app sits on which side. After you repeat a pairing enough times, Split can suggest a familiar app to fill the empty side. Split stays out of the Dock, supports ten languages, and keeps the window and app metadata it uses for arranging and suggestions on your Mac.

Compared to Similar Tools

Compared to Rectangle (free, fixed positions) and Magnet ($5.99, fixed positions), Split's shared divider is the key difference — instead of snapping to a fixed grid position and staying there, a Split pairing can be resized live by dragging the divider, which keeps both windows in sync. Compared to BetterSnapTool ($2.99, custom snap areas), Split adds app pairing suggestions and Option–Tab stacking on top of shortcut- and drag-based placement, features not present in BetterSnapTool's zone-based approach. Split does not offer a custom zone editor like BentoBox or MacsyZones — its model is pairing and resizing two windows rather than designing arbitrary multi-zone layouts.
