About

FancyZones-style custom zone editor. Draw zones, snap with Shift+drag or keyboard. Per-display layouts, zone spanning.

Who It's For

BentoBox is for Mac users who want a Windows FancyZones experience — draw arbitrary snap zones on your display, then snap windows into them. If you work on a large or ultrawide monitor and find fixed halves/thirds insufficient for your layouts, BentoBox lets you design zones that match your specific workflow: a wide editor zone, a narrow sidebar zone, and a bottom terminal strip, for example. At $9, it's positioned as a focused alternative to Rectangle Pro's custom zones or MacsyZones.

How It Works

BentoBox provides a visual zone editor where you draw rectangles directly on a representation of your display. Zones can span any portion of the screen and can overlap. To snap a window, hold Shift while dragging it toward a zone — a preview highlights the target zone and the window snaps on drop. Keyboard shortcuts provide an alternative path: navigate zones with Vim-style hjkl keys and press enter to snap the focused window. Each display gets its own independent zone layout.

Compared to Similar Tools

Compared to MacsyZones (free, open-source), BentoBox has a more polished zone editor but costs $9 and is closed-source. MacsyZones also adds a shake-to-snap gesture that BentoBox lacks. Compared to Rectangle Pro ($9.99), BentoBox is focused exclusively on custom zones — Rectangle Pro also includes cursor gestures, window groups, per-app settings, and integration with the Rectangle shortcut vocabulary. Users who want the most capable custom zone editor choose Rectangle Pro; users who just want FancyZones-style snapping can use either BentoBox or MacsyZones.
