About

MacGrid puts macOS desktops and full-screen apps on a 2D grid instead of the single horizontal row of Spaces. Navigate with four-way trackpad swipes or keyboard shortcuts, and open a live map of your Spaces. Works with SIP enabled.

Who It's For

MacGrid is for MacBook and Magic Trackpad users who rely on macOS Spaces and full-screen apps, and who find that swiping left and right along one long row stops scaling once they have more than a handful. Laying Spaces out on a grid lets you group related desktops by position (above, below, left or right) instead of counting swipes. It also suits people who want this without disabling System Integrity Protection.

How It Works

macOS keeps Spaces in a single horizontal row. MacGrid arranges your desktops and full-screen apps on a two-dimensional grid instead, and lets you move between them with trackpad swipes in all four directions: up, down, left and right. A live map of your Spaces shows where you are on the grid, and you can open it to jump around. Keyboard shortcuts cover the same navigation and open the map, for when you're not on a trackpad. The site doesn't list the default key combinations.

MacGrid works on top of native Spaces rather than replacing them with its own virtual desktops, and the site states it "works with System Integrity Protection enabled." It is a GUI app; there is no config file, CLI or scripting interface. The site doesn't say what system permissions it asks for, or how it handles multiple displays.

Compared to Alternatives

The closest comparison is SpaceAtlas, which also arranges native macOS Spaces into a grid and also requires macOS 15. SpaceAtlas centers on directional keyboard shortcuts plus extras such as app-to-Space assignment, saved profiles, and "wormholes" for jumping across the grid. MacGrid's emphasis is on four-way trackpad swipes and a live map, and it explicitly places full-screen apps on the grid alongside desktops. On price, MacGrid is a $4.9 one-time purchase after a 7-day trial, versus €24.89 for SpaceAtlas after its 40-day trial. Neither requires disabling SIP.

Requirements

  • macOS 15 or later
  • Apple Silicon (the site does not mention Intel support)
  • MacBook trackpad or Magic Trackpad for gestures
  • Works with SIP enabled
  • $4.9 one-time purchase after a 7-day free trial; one licence covers up to 2 activations

Getting Started

Download the DMG directly from trymacgrid.com. Every feature is unlocked for the 7-day trial. After launching, open the live map to see how your existing desktops and full-screen apps are placed on the grid, then try swiping up, down, left and right on the trackpad to move between them.
