About
AeroOverlay displays a floating overlay showing all active AeroSpace workspaces, their windows, and system stats. Activated by double-tapping Option, it supports keyboard navigation, click-to-switch, and shell script integration for toggling and notifications.
Who It's For
AeroOverlay is for AeroSpace users who want a Mission Control-style overview of all their workspaces and windows on demand, without leaving keyboard-driven flow. Double-tapping Option summons a floating overlay showing all active workspaces as a grid, their windows, and system stats (CPU, RAM, battery) — giving you a spatial map of your entire AeroSpace layout at a glance. It's free, open-source, and designed specifically for AeroSpace.
How It Works
AeroOverlay reads the current AeroSpace workspace state via its IPC and renders a floating overlay panel covering the screen. Each workspace appears as a labeled card with its windows listed inside. You navigate between workspaces using keyboard shortcuts or by clicking directly — clicking a workspace card switches AeroSpace to that workspace and dismisses the overlay. System stats (CPU, RAM, battery) and external monitor indicators are displayed alongside the workspace grid. Shell script integration lets you toggle the overlay from other tools or AeroSpace keybindings, and the overlay supports notifications triggered from scripts.
Compared to Similar Tools
Compared to AeroMux (persistent sidebar), AeroOverlay is summoned on demand and dismissed after use — less screen real estate consumed, but requires an explicit activation. Compared to AeroSpaceBar (menu bar workspace indicators), AeroOverlay provides a full-screen visual overview vs. a compact indicator strip. For AeroSpace users who want the spatial overview only when needed, AeroOverlay's double-tap activation fits naturally into a keyboard-driven workflow.
Requirements
- AeroSpace window manager must be installed and running
